CCOG Receives NADO Award for Excellence in Regional Transportation
Centralina Council of Governments has been honored with a National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) 2011 Excellence in Regional Transportation Award for the Lake Norman Regional Bicycle Plan.
The Lake Norman Regional Bicycle Plan is the first regional bicycle plan in North Carolina. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) approached CCOG in 2009 to create the plan. It was based upon an earlier study initiated by CCOG on how bicyclists might best circumnavigate Lake Norman through Mecklenburg, Iredell, Catawba and Lincoln Counties.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is using the process for development of the Lake Norman Regional Bicycle Plan to serve as a model for the creation of similar plans in other parts of the state.
The 14-month plan development process included ongoing input from four counties, five municipalities, three transportation planning organizations, as well as two NCDOT Transportation Divisions. Public input and public comment meetings were held throughout the study area, and presentations were made to community groups and community leaders during the process. A steering committee met monthly.
The 2011 NADO Excellence in Regional Transportation Award winners will be honored at the Awards Reception at NADO’s National Rural Transportation Conference, to be held in Washington, DC from August 24 – 26, 2011. The Awards Reception will take place from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24.
The award-winning projects will be judged by a group of peers during the Awards Reception, and the top winners selected will be honored under a new “Trailblazers” category, recognizing exceptional projects that demonstrate unique innovation.
NADO provides advocacy, education, peer exchanges and research for the nation’s regional development organizations. The association and its members promote regional strategies, partnerships and solutions to strengthen the economic competitiveness and quality of life across America’s local communities.
